2026 NAS Upgrade

Finally upgraded my NAS this week. It’s an older machine I built years ago and repurposed it as a NAS running TrueNAS for home storage and Jellyfin. Upgraded 2 x 4TB mirrored drives for 3 × 8TB in RAIDZ1. Going from 3.5TB to 15.7TB total space. I’m still planning on getting a fourth drive to use as a spare but for now this is going to be it for a while. I’m definitely not an advanced user as far as Linux goes, but just watching Youtube tutorial videos has made this process very doable. Next things to upgrade other than a spare drive is a new modern case, power supply, CPU fan to fit the new case, new SATA SSD to replace aging main drive. I was thinking of getting more RAM but as is everything is running with no issues, so I’ll skip it. I was also consider an extra SSD for use as a cache drive but for my use cases it’s not really necessary so I would just be wasting money on that. Normally I have a local folder that I sync to the NAS (FreeFileSync) so I’m not working straight out of the NAS and speed doesn’t matter for that. Even then it’s still fairly snappy and dealing with lightroom and folders full of raw photos isn’t too bad either. Not much to complain about.

Current system:
Intel Xeon CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz, 8GB ECC DDR3 (2 × 4GB), 64GB SATA SSD main drive and 3 × 8TB in RAIDZ1
